Jan Johnston to Lead OK AgrAbility Project: Dr. Jan Johnston, State Extension Specialist, gerontology, is the new leader for the Oklahoma AgrAbility Project. She will expand the program by providing “Self-Help Arthritis Classes.” AgrAbility has traditionally focused on helping farmers and ranchers who may have suffered an injury that prevents them from working. Through the program, these individuals are assisted in getting referrals to services that can provide them with therapy and assistive devices ranging from specialized tools, to artificial limbs, to lifts to get on and off of equipment, etc. The goal of these efforts is to return these individuals to productive farming and ranching work as soon as possible. Dr. Johnston is expanding the program to include an emphasis on disabilities caused by arthritis. Arthritis is a disability that many Oklahomans live with that affects their day-to-day living. Providing a program to help individuals manage their arthritis through support and evidence-based information is one valuable way AgrAbility is positioned to assist the citizens of the state. This resource – the National Arthritis Foundation’s Self-Help Arthritis Program - can assist agricultural families as well as non-agricultural families. Dr. Johnston has recently arranged for 18 FCS educators to receive training and be certified by the National Arthritis Foundation as instructors for “Self-Help Arthritis Classes.”  This is a great start to what will be a valuable resource to Oklahoma communities and strengthen the efforts of AgrAbility.  These classes have been met with strong levels of success in other states.  Dr. Johnston indicates that one of her goals is to provide such certification to all educators who desire the training.  The next round of certification training is planned for this fall.
