Rehabilitating Conference Starts Today: The purpose of the Oklahoma AgrAbility’s Rehabilitating Farmers and Ranchers workshop is to educate rehabilitation professionals – including physical therapists, occupational therapists, and rehabilitation counselors – about the resources of the Oklahoma AgrAbility Project. The workshop takes place today and tomorrow, Oct. 8-9, and will focus on developing cultural competence and assessment skills necessary to work with farmers and ranchers with physical impairments and disabilities who want to remain working in agriculture. The conference is taking place at the Seretean Wellness Center on the Oklahoma State University Stillwater campus. OK-FIRE Training Sessions Continue: There are several OK-FIRE training opportunities taking place during October and November. OK-FIRE is a weather-based decision-support system for wildland fire managers in Oklahoma. All sessions this fall will be half-day workshops in a computer lab setting in which participants will have hands-on computer experience with the OK-FIRE website. The beginning class is geared toward those who are new to OK-FIRE and will provide a general overview, including weather, fire, and smoke sections of the website and the fire prescription planner. An advanced class is available for those who have already attended an OK-FIRE workshop. Tree Care Workshop Slated Nov. 3: Gardeners looking for innovative information regarding proper tree care should plant to attend  the Tree Care Conference Nov. 3 at The Botanic Garden located west of Stillwater. The information offered at the conference will be the latest research-based information available. Early registration is $80, which includes lunche, and must be postmarked by Oct. 25. Extension Educators, Master Gardeners, OBGA members, and students with student ID may pre-register at the discounted rate of $55. After Oct. 25 the registration is $125. Totusek Lectureship to Take Place in November: The Oklahoma State University Department of Animal Science and the Animal Science Graduate Student Association will present the 17th Annual Totusek Lectureship Nov. 4-5.The event begins the evening of Nov. 4 with a prime rib dinner and seminar, followed by a noon general seminar in animal science on Nov. 5. The event is free, but those who are interested are asked to RSVP to Evin Sharman at evin.sharman@okstate.edu. This year’s lectureship will feature speaker Mike Thoren who has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding LLC since the Company’s inception.  From 2003 until 2005, Thoren was the President and CEO of ContiBeef LLC, a former wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Grain Company. The lectureship is in honor of Robert Totusek, who was a member of the OSU Animal Science faculty for more than 38 years, including 14 years as head of the department.


4-H’ers Make a Big Showing at Tulsa State Fair: A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated in judging and exhibiting the 4-H exhibits at the Tulsa State Fair. There were 2,812 4-H exhibits entered and judged in 522 classes that represented youth from 30 Oklahoma counties.

New Course Offered: The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is offering a one-credit-hour undergraduate course entitled “Post-Harvest, Structural, and Urban Arthropod Pests” (ENTO 3021) in the spring semester of 2011. Hermann Recognized by Alma Mater: Janice Hermann, Extension nutrition education state specialist,has been honored with the Distinguished Research Award by Kansas State University.  She will be recognized today by her alma mater during the College of Human Ecology’s Celebration of Excellence.
