Agricultural and Food Biotechnology - SBIR NSF 01-28 Sponsor:
NSF, ENG, DMII, SBIR and Biotechnology (BT). Deadline:
January 17, 2002 Abstract:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) solicits Small Business Innovation
Research (SBIR) in the following four broad areas:
The
Biotechnology topic addresses the rapidly advancing frontiers in the biosciences
that are strongly stimulating the creation and growth of small businesses based
on biotechnology. These small businesses connect bioscience discoveries to
society through the commercialization of new products, devices, processes, or
services. The Biotechnology program area solicits proposals targeted toward the
generation of innovative new products, devices, processes, or services. The
program's main thrust, in accordance with applicable legislation and the NSF
mission, is to transform scientific discovery into social benefits and to
emphasize private sector commercialization. Innovative biotechnology proposals
that cut across technical disciplines are eagerly sought. The Biotechnology
program solicits proposals on the Agricultural and Food Biotechnology subtopic.
Proposals should address how biotechnology can be applied to crops and food products
or how it can enhance food safety. Biological control of pests is included in
this subtopic. URL:

Producer Grant Program Sponsor:
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Cooperative State Research,
Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), and Sustainable Agriculture Research
and Education (SARE) Southern Region – SARE. Deadline:
January 25, 2002 Amount:
$15,000 Abstract:
The Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)
Program recognizes the value and importance of on-farm, producer experience in
developing solutions to agricultural production problems. In order to capture
this producer experience, the Southern Region SARE Producer Grant Program is
requesting grant proposals from producers or producer organizations interested
in conducting research or education projects related to sustainable agriculture.
This program is a complement to the SARE research and education-granting
program. A Producer Grant is a research, marketing, or education project in the
area of sustainable agriculture. Projects must be developed, coordinated, and
conducted by farmers, ranchers, or a producer organization. Producer
organizations should be comprised primarily of farmers or ranchers and must have
majority farmer representation on their governing board. Producers or producer
organizations complete a proposal describing their project and explaining how it
will help other producers understand and adopt sustainable agriculture
practices. URL:

Grants Sponsor:
Laird Norton Endowment Foundation Amount:
$8,000 Deadline:
February 01, 2002 Abstract:
The mission of the Laird Norton Endowment Foundation is to fund distinctive
programs in conservation and forestry education. Through the year 2004 the
granting focus is on sustainable forestry. The foundation defines sustainable
forestry as the "practice of forestry that restores, enhances, and then
sustains a full range of forest values, both ecological and economic."
Other common names for this practice are ecoforestry, low-impact forestry, new
forestry, and forest stewardship. The foundation will accept letters of inquiry
for projects in the following areas: 1.
Development and implementation of independent third-party sustainable forestry
certification, audit, and chain-of-custody standards. 2.
Promotion and training for the above mentioned priority. 3.
Marketing of products from certified forests. 4.
Forestland owner education and assistance programs related to sustainable
forestry. 5.
Development and implementation of collaborative stewardship programs in
forest-dependent communities. 6.
Restoration forestry, including research, demonstration, and implementation. 7.
K-12 sustainable forestry education programs. 8.
Sustainable-forestry-related internships for college-level students. 9.
Incorporation of sustainable-forestry concepts and full-cost accounting systems
into professional education standards. 10.
"Distinguished Visitor Programs" to bring leaders in sustainable
forestry to schools of forestry and environmental studies at universities and
college 11.
Ecosystem-based approaches to forestry in genera. URL:

Microbiologist- RA-00-001L Sponsor:
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS)
and Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions. Amount:
$96,400 Abstract:
The research associate will be a member of a research group studying the
picornavirus that causes foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). A portion of this effort
is dedicated to understanding the speed of replication and specificity (host
range) of this important disease in cattle and swine. The specific project that
the associate will complete is the characterization of the genetic basis of the
altered host range of FMD that caused the multibillion-dollar outbreak in Taiwan
in the spring of 1997. Studies will target the altered 3A-coding region of this
virus, which we have previously shown to be a major factor in preventing this
virus from spreading to cattle in the outbreak in Taiwan (Beard and Mason, 2000,
J. Virol. in press). The associate will utilize state-of-the-art molecular
biology techniques to study how the 3A protein interacts with host-cell
components, as well as other viral components, during infection. Experiments
will draw on existing knowledge of FMDV molecular biology, virus structure,
cell-biology, and pathogenesis, and should lead to important new discoveries in
animal disease research. The center is located in Long Island Sound; requiring
daily boat rides from Orient Point, New York or Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Work
will be performed in a biocontainment facility. URL:

Written Species Accounts for Plants That Are Potentially Negatively Affected by
Ungulate Grazing. Sponsor:
Department of Agriculture, USDA Forest Service. Abstract:
Southwestern Region intends to contract for written species accounts for plants
that are potentially negatively affected by ungulate grazing. The accounts will
include the basic biology and ecology of the species, the affects of grazing on
the plants, any possible management of the species and references. A Regional
Forest Service team has identified an initial species list of plants that maybe
negatively affected. The vendor will review this list and modify the list as
needed, adding or deleting species. The vendor must have... ~~~~~~~~~ Title:

These volunteers are qualified non-specialists, recruited and screened according to your needs. To date, Earthwatch Institute has supported over 1,000 research expeditions in 118 countries with more than 50,000 volunteers contributing $37 million to scholarship. Examples of projects funded to date have used volunteers to: -
