and Management of Pests and Beneficial Organisms Deadline:
January 15, 2003 Amount:
$300,000 Abstract:
Effective and economical pest control that preserves the environment and results
in safe, high-quality food, feed, and fiber is a cornerstone of sustainable
agriculture. Integrated pest management uses a systems approach to obtain this
goal and includes the use of biological control agents, plant resistance,
cultural practices, and pesticides (where appropriate), in combination with
biologically based methods to manage pests.
The Biologically Based Pest Management program is a mission-linked
program intended to complement integrated pest management. In this program, the
term pests includes weeds, arthropods, plant parasitic nematodes, and plant
pathogens. Studies involving vertebrate pests are not appropriate for this
program. The systems under study can include pests occurring in horticultural
and field crops, forests, rangelands, urban landscapes, food or feed transported
and stored for human or livestock consumption, and arthropod pests of livestock.

pathogens and as beneficial organisms. This program will support fundamental and
mission-linked research on interactions between plants and their associated
microbes, including fungi and fungal-like microbes, bacteria, viruses, viroids,

An understanding of the fundamental principles governing plant population
dynamics is essential to manage plant populations effectively. Application of
these fundamental principles will contribute to improved agricultural
productivity and sustainability. Research supported by this program will lead to
an improved understanding of the extent of genetic and phenotypic diversity

Natural Resources and the Environment Deadline:
November 01, 2002 Amount:
$450,000 Abstract:
The goals of this program are to understand the impact of agriculture, forest,
and rangeland practices on ecological systems and to promote their
sustainability for the production of food, fiber, and forage. Future
agricultural productivity depends on our ability to utilize the earth's
renewable natural resources without depleting them. Therefore, we must strive to
understand how current agricultural practices affect natural and managed
ecosystems while developing improved management strategies for agricultural
sustainability. While classical ecosystem studies focus on a community of
organisms and their environment, the Managed Ecosystems Program acknowledges the
role humans play in effecting environmental change in range, forest, crop,
aquatic, and estuarine ecosystems. URL:

December 01, 2002 Amount: $300,000Abstract:
A major goal of plant biology in the post-genome era will be to discover the
function of a large number of gene products identified in genetic and genomic
studies. However, the rapid progress in molecular biology and genetic technology
in the past two decades has outpaced progress in biochemistry and other areas.
It is generally agreed that the lack of sufficient biochemical knowledge of
metabolic pathways and their regulation is a rate- limiting step for making
optimal use of the plethora of genetic sequence information that is becoming
available. The application of biotechnology specific information about the
metabolic consequences of a genetic modification. Fortunately, however, many
previously intractable biochemical problems have become accessible because of
advances and innovations in genetic technology. The development of several
excellent plant and microbial genetic model systems has also provided new
approaches to isolating genes for many enzymes. The purpose of this new program
area is to provide funding opportunities and to stimulate research activities in
plant biochemistry in general. URL:

January 15, 2003 Amount:
$300,000 Abstract:
Animal genomic will play an increasingly important role in assuring the
continued profitability and competitiveness of U.S. animal agriculture.
Identifying, mapping, and understanding the function and control of genes will
permit the development of new genetic technologies and increase the ability to
realize the full genetic potential for improvement of agriculturally important
animal and aquaculture species. The long-term objectives of this program are to
increase fundamental knowledge of the composition, organization, and function of
the genome and to increase the ability to genetically improve agriculturally
important animals, including horses and aquaculture species. Increased knowledge
in this area will aid in maintaining the genetic diversity of animals, improving
animal productivity and efficiency, matching genetic backgrounds to desired
traits, integrating quantitative and molecular genetic information, and
effectively using transgenic methods. Also, animal agricultural products would
be produced more efficiently and be of improved quality. URL:

Research that develops an understanding of the multiple factors involved in food
safety and provides the science-based data for policy decisions requires
epidemiological studies. Significant gaps exist in the knowledge base for food
safety and the risk factors involved in the entire continuum of food production,
from farm to table. Epidemiological studies of pre- and post-harvest areas are
vital to identify and characterize pathogenic organisms, including their sources
and reservoirs; and to understand the transmission of the pathogen along the
entire continuum. The identification of risk factors for exposure to and
infection by these pathogens can be accomplished by several different
epidemiological research methodologies. These methodologies can be applied at
any stage of food production. Environmental and ecological data are needed to
increase our understanding of disease-causing microorganisms, their products,
and naturally occurring contaminants in meats, poultry, seafood, and fresh
fruits and vegetables. URL:

Through rapid growth in population and increasing demand for resources, the
world is in danger of losing much of its genetic, species, and ecosystem
diversity. To address this challenge and to increase understanding of the strong
relationships between the health of the biosphere and the welfare of human
communities, the MacArthur Foundation has established the Conservation and
Sustainable Development area. This area is dedicated to conserving biodiversity,
to enhancing knowledge of how to use natural resources sustainable over the long
term, and to promoting sustainable economic growth with social equity. URL:

December 31, 2002 Amount:
$5,000 Abstract:
The Robert E. Wagner Award was established by the Potash and Phosphate Institute
(PPI) Board of Directors in 1988. The award recognizes distinguished
contributions to advanced crop yields through maximum yield research (MYR) and
maximum economic yield (MEY) management. The MEY concept, also known as most
efficient yield, provides a solid foundation for meeting world food needs. The
award recognizes outstanding achievements in research, extension, or education
that focuses on efficient management of plant nutrients and their positive
interaction in fully integrated crop production systems that enhance yield
potential. Such systems improve net returns, lower unit costs of production, and
maintain environmental quality. URL:

The J. Fielding Reed Fellowship Program offers awards to deserving graduate
students studying soil or plant science. Priority will be given to students in
agronomy and horticulture majoring in soil fertility, but those in soil
chemistry, crop physiology, and other areas related to plant nutrition will be
given every consideration. URL:

Earthwatch Institute and Social Sciences Abstract:
The Center for Field Research (CFR) invites proposals for field research on
world hunger and food security issues. Proposals for multi-disciplinary field
research involving transnational collaboration are particularly welcome.
Projects have utilized Earthwatch volunteers to: -
Map villages for sampling purposes in Peru. - Take anthropometric measurements of mothers for nutritional assessment in Nepal, Zimbabwe, and Bolivia. - Follow and record the activities of villagers in northern Cameroon for use in the estimation of energy expenditure patterns. - Interview farmers in the Caribbean to collect income and expenditure data in order to assess the impact of cash cropping on home consumption patterns for a farming systems research project. - Collect potato cultivars in the Andean highlands and interview farmers there about their tuber storage and cultivation practices. -
Document indigenous methods of amaranth cultivation and use in eastern Nepal. -
Chronicle natural resource use at the household level in Kerala, India. A
typical project would employ four to eight volunteers each on three to five
sequential teams. Teams normally spend two weeks in the field. Shorter and
longer teams are encouraged where appropriate, as are larger or smaller teams. URL:
