Physiological Genomic Sponsor:
American Physiological Society (APS) and Student Awards Deadline:
January 15, 2002 Amount:
$69,000 Abstract:
The American Physiological Society (APS) Postdoctoral Fellowship in
Physiological Genomic has been established in recognition of the fact that many
advances in genomic will ultimately require a functional understanding in the
context of the organism, and special training will be needed to conduct this
type of research. The ideal candidate is one who has completed outstanding work
in a top-flight graduate program (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, etc.) and
who has the intention of employing organ system approaches during his or her
postdoctoral training. Alternatively, a well-trained graduate in integrative
physiology might wish to expand his or her work through the use of molecular
biological tools and genomic. A central criterion of the postdoctoral project
requires the scientist to use the tools of cellular and molecular biology in the
setting of the whole animal. Candidates for this program should identify a
laboratory and sponsor under whose supervision a project in organ system
physiology and molecular biology/genomic can be combined. URL:

Environmental Studies Sponsor: Garden
Club of America Amount: $1,500Abstract:
The purpose of the Garden Club of America (GCA) Awards for Summer Environmental
Studies is to encourage studies and careers in the environmental field. The
awards provide financial aid toward summer studies in the environmental field
for college students following their freshman, sophomore, or junior year. The
student chooses the specific course of study in the field of ecology and site of
study. Some of the summer programs that students have completed recently include
the following course topics: Endangered plant species, Conservation biology,
Ecological restoration, Plant resources of the tropics, Historical vegetation,
Environmental legislation, Mapping, and Environmental journalism. URL:

Animal Behavior Society (ABS) Deadline:
January 25, 2002 Amount:
$1,000 Abstract:
The Animal Behavior Society (ABS) Research Grants Committee announces the 2002
competition for funds in support of student research. ABS promotes and
encourages the biological study of animal behavior in the broadest sense,
including studies at all levels of organization using both descriptive and
experimental methods under natural and controlled conditions. Both research
studies and the dissemination of knowledge about animal behavior through
publications, educational programs, and activities are encouraged. URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=32963 ~~~~~~~~~ Topic: USDA Career

and Scientific Exchanges Division (RSED)
The
Research and Scientific Exchanges Division (RSED) promotes international
cooperation on sustainable agricultural and forestry systems to help secure a
safe and adequate food supply. RSED supports cooperation between American and
foreign researchers through activities directed at potential threats to U.S.
agriculture and forestry, development of new technologies, and enhancement of
agribusiness and trade in foreign markets. Participating countries benefit
through a variety of activities including both short and long-term visits of
U.S. and foreign scientists, collaborative research projects, and technical
workshops. With U.S. and international funding, RSED develops and implements
projects as well as establishes links for the network of agricultural experts in
USDA, other federal agencies, the university system and private sector
organizations. RSED also provides technical support to design and facilitate
project implementation from the development stage through final evaluation. Contact

Fellowships to Support USAID’s International Democracy & Governance
Activities Purpose:
World
Learning's Democracy Fellows Program (DFP), funded by the U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID), supports approximately 14 Democracy
Fellowships annually, awarding approximately 4-6 new Democracy Fellowships
each year. Fellows work in USAID missions abroad or in Washington offices,
helping to implement USAID programs to promote or strengthen democratic
practices and institutions in transitional or emerging democracies. Benefits:
Fellowships provide a monthly payment that is generally intended to be wage-neutral
to each fellow. Specific stipends depend upon documented prior wages, education
and experience at the time the fellowship begins. Currently the approximate
stipend ranges are: (a) for junior-level fellows $33-54K; (b) for mid-level
fellows $56-79K; and (c) for senior-level fellows $79-87K. ~~~~~~~~~ Links to
