These grants provide seed money for pilot projects, with hope that the works will gain creditability and subsequently receive larger sums of money from other sources. Grants from Wildlife Forever are targeted for research management, acquisition, and educational purposes. Special emphasis is placed upon grassroots programs. Grants are offered on a 'challenge' basis, to spur new initiatives, leverage available funding, and encourage a spirit of cooperation among a variety of funding sources and recipients. Deadline: June 15, 2003 Abstract: The objective of this grant program is to defend biodiversity by protecting natural habitats. This program's priorities are to support ecosystem-wide habitat protection with particular emphasis on locally developed strategies for private and public lands; to support efforts that defend wild places from destructive practices such as mining, logging, and over-grazing; to support efforts that create understanding of the relationship between wildlife, habitat protection, and long-term economic stability; protecting the world's last remaining vast tracts of relatively undisturbed forest lands (a special geographic focus of Russia, Brazil, and Canada exists for this funding priority); to protect forest ecosystems through reducing wood consumption, eliminating waste, and promoting safe, sustainable non-wood alternatives. This program's priorities are to strengthen the advocacy, outreach, and technical capabilities of organizations addressing the protection of water systems; to stop the further degradation of water-dependent habitats from new dams, diversions, and other large infrastructure projects; to reduce wasteful water use by conservation; to promote allocation of water specifically for environmental purposes, including habitat restoration and fish and wildlife protection; to support efforts to improve public policies affecting water protection, including initiatives to secure pollution prevention and habitat protection; to reduce pesticide use; and to strengthen the advocacy, outreach, and technical capabilities addressing the disproportionate use and location of toxic material in poor and rural areas. The purpose of this program is to supplement research in statistics with experience at the NASS. The program is designed to provide the selected fellows and associates with research opportunities or experience in the application of statistical theory in all phases of large-scale agricultural survey operations, including design, collection, quality control, forecasting, estimation, and analysis. Participants in the program will engage in research that is of mutual interest to the participant and NASS. Fellows and associates conduct research in residence at NASS, gaining unique opportunities for use of extensive NASS data and interaction with NASS staff. Control and Prevention (CDC) Deadline: June 13, 2003 Amount: $720,000 Abstract: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), announces the availability of FY 2003 funds for a cooperative agreement program for Community Partners for Healthy Farming Intervention. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to develop community-based farm safety and health interventions research and prevention projects through partnerships with researchers, workers, farm managers, local agricultural communities, and other stakeholders.
