Title: Check off Research Program

Sponsor: United Soybean Board (USB)

Abstract: The Soybean Check off is based on a rate of 0.5 percent of the market price per bushel sold of soybean, paid by soybean farmers across the nation. Half of the farmers’ funds go to work at the state level, supporting marketing and research programs right where their beans are grown. The other half is forwarded to the United Soybean Board (USB), where it is invested in five major areas: International Marketing, Domestic Marketing, New Uses, Production, and Communications. The USB is a farmer-led organization, with 62 farmer-directors investing in more than 350 marketing and research projects annually. These directors are nominated by their farmer-volunteer Qualified State Soybean Boards and appointed by the U.S. secretary of agriculture.

Title: Programme N09 - Food Acceptability and Choice (RRD8/N09/C)

Sponsor: Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Research and Survey Requirements

Deadline: July 12, 2002

Abstract: The Food Standards Agency commissions research covering the whole range of its research and survey activities to investigate specific issues. It uses the findings from this work both to develop its policies and to assess their effectiveness or to develop research where policy changes require new knowledge. The agency's research programme supports its work on consumer protection, and covers a wide variety of topics including food safety (including toxicology and food intolerance), nutrition, food authenticity, food quality issues, and risk communication. The Food Acceptability and Choice Programme is aimed at understanding the basis upon which consumers make food choices and quantify the influence of these factors on the determination of choices. An important aspect of this programme is the determination of factors that may inhibit sensible dietary choices and how these barriers may be overcome. Many factors influence individual’s food choice. These are summarized in the socio-economic model of health developed by Dahlgren & Whitehead (1991). Specific components that impact upon food choice are facts, life skills, social influences, access, and overcoming barriers. This programme is important in addressing different aspects of each of these as they interact within the daily life of the population. The need to understand the issues that influence food choice and acceptability are central to overcoming barriers to dietary behavior change and form an important part of the agency’s nutrition strategy. The learning from this work is essential to ensuring appropriate policy development by the Food Standards Agency as well as providing advice to the agency's colleagues in other government departments, pan-Europe, and internationally. Research proposals are invited to present a written review of the evidence on the psychosocial basis of food choice, identifying factors that can be used to influence positive food choices, examples of where positive changes have been achieved, and gaps in the evidence base.

Title: Research and Education Program

Sponsor: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) and Southern Region - SARE

Deadline: August 30, 2002

Amount: $175,000

Abstract: The Southern Region U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Program on Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) is requesting pre proposals for research and education activities that address issues of sustainable agriculture of current and potential importance to the region and nation. Sustainable agriculture is an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long-term: satisfy human food and fiber needs; enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agriculture economy depends; make the most use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources, and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls; sustain the economic viability of farm operations; and enhance the quality of life for farmers and ranchers, and society as a whole. The objective of the SARE program is to enable the full spectrum of farmers and ranchers to move profitably toward production systems compatible with the concept of sustainable agriculture. Specific objectives are: to promote good stewardship of the nation's natural resources by providing site specific and profitable sustainable farming and ranching methods that strengthen agricultural competitiveness; satisfy human food and fiber needs; maintain and enhance the quality and productivity of the soil; conserve soil, water, energy, natural resources, and fish and wildlife habitat; protect endangered species; maintain and improve the quality of surface and groundwater; protect the health and safety of persons involved in the food or farm system; enhance the quality of life for farmers or ranchers and society as a whole, in part by increasing income and employment - especially profitable self-employment opportunities in agriculture and rural communities; strengthen the family farm system of agriculture, a system characterized by small- and moderate-sized farms that are principally owner operated; promote crop, livestock, and enterprise diversification and the well-being of animals; and strengthen rural communities by creating economic conditions, including value-added products that foster locally owned business and employment opportunities. Project outcomes must address economic, environmental, and social issues, focusing on developing sustainable agriculture systems or moving existing systems toward sustainable agriculture as defined in the 1990 Farm Bill. The project's central purpose should be research based with an educational or outreach component to extend the project findings to the public. The SARE program encourages a system-oriented approach to all priority areas in 2003.
