$266,000 Abstract:
The Bi-national Agricultural and Research Development (BARD) supports
cooperative agricultural research projects that are of mutual interest to the
United States and Israel. Appropriate projects cover all phases of research and
development, including integrated projects and basic or applied research.
Proposals are reviewed by panels representing the following fields: agricultural
economics; agricultural engineering; animal production; animal protection;
aquaculture; cellular and molecular biology in agriculture; field and garden
crops; fruit tree crops; plant protection; post-harvest science and food

Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) Sponsor:
USDA, Rural Business-Cooperative Service and Farm Service Agency Abstract:
The Farm Service Agency (FSA) invites state governments to propose Conservation
Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) projects under the general Conservation
Reserve Program (CRP). CREP is an opportunity for the joining of resources of
the federal and state governments to address critical environmental issues such
as soil erosion, water quality degradation, and wildlife habitat loss associated
with agricultural activities. This action is also part of the National
Performance Review Initiative to deliver better service and foster partnership
and community solutions. The CRP assists farmers and ranchers in conserving
soil, water, and wildlife resources by converting highly erodible and other
environmentally sensitive acreage normally devoted to the production of
agricultural commodities and marginal pastureland to a long-term
resource-conserving cover. CRP participants enroll in contracts for periods of
10 to 15 years in exchange for annual rental payments and cost-share assistance
for installing those long-term resource-conserving practices. Up to 36.4 million
acres were authorized to be enrolled in the CRP at any one time, and as of June
1, 1998, approximately six million acres were still available. Proposals are
typically limited to 100,000 acres. URL:

Student Challenge Awards Program (SCAP) Sponsor:
Earth watch Institute. Deadline:
September 03, 2001. Abstract:
Earth watch Institute supports research and education through the Student
Challenge Awards Program (SCAP). Scientists with research projects amenable to
the participation of talented high school students are invited to apply for
grants. These grants cover the expense of giving six to eight high school
students the opportunity to work alongside scientists at research sites in North
America, Hawaii, or the Caribbean. Students with interest in science and
demonstrated talent in the arts and humanities are recruited through a
nationwide search and highly competitive selection process. Earth watch
Institute assigns the students to research sites. The Student Challenge Awards
Program aims to excite the imagination and expand the potential of creative
young thinkers, and to stimulate their curiosity about science and technology.
Earth watch seeks research projects that will inspire the vision and aspirations
of award recipients Through
exposure to talented scientists, important scientific issues, and
state-of-the-art technologies. Principal investigators gain the research
assistance of highly motivated high school students and an opportunity to
enhance these students' scientific literacy and overall potential. URL:

Innovative Food Safety Projects Sponsor:
Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). Deadline:
July 05, 2001 Amount:
$50,000 Abstract: The specific objective of this program will be to complement, develop, or improve state and local food safety programs that would have applicability to food safety programs nationwide. Applications that fulfill the following specific project objectives will be considered for funding. Each application must address only one project. Applicants may apply for more than one project area, but must submit a separate application for each project. These grants are not to fund or conduct food inspections for food safety regulatory agencies. There are two key project areas identified for this effort: inspection, and education and health information dissemination. The "inspection" project area involves the development of innovative regulatory inspection methods or techniques for the inspection process of various food establishments in order to improve effectiveness and efficiency. Innovative regulatory program methodology projects must demonstrate an effect on factors that contribute to food borne illness in all, or a segment of, food industry programs. For example, projects could address key elements from the draft entitled "Recommended National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards", such as the five food code interventions (management knowledge, employee health, hands as a vehicle of contamination, time/temperature relationships, and consumer advisory), or the five Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) risk factors (improper holding temperature, inadequate cooking, contaminated equipment, unsafe source, and poor personal hygiene). Other examples of projects in this area could include prevention and control of Listeria monocytogenes in retail and food service environments and projects that address shell egg safety, such as refrigeration, safe handling, or labeling. The goal of these projects should be to achieve efficient and effective compliance with regulations that impact contributing factors to food borne illness. The "education and health information dissemination" project area involves the development of innovative education projects and materials for state and local food safety regulatory officials that foster consistency and uniform application of state and local food regulations. These education projects or materials must be reproducible by other state and local food safety regulatory. These projects may incorporate concurrent education of both state and local food safety regulatory agencies and the food industry. URL:
