Farm Efficiency and Probability Sponsor:
USDA, CSREES and IFAFS. Deadline:
April 23, 2001 Amount:
$5,000,000 Abstract:
The purpose of the Initiative for Agriculture and Food Systems (IFAFS) is
to support research, education, and extension grants that address critical
emerging U.S. agricultural issues related to future food production,
environmental quality and natural resource management, or farm income. In
awarding IFAFS grants, priority will be given to projects that are multi-state,
multi-institutional, or multidisciplinary; or projects that integrate
agricultural research, extension, and education. For IFAFS Program Area 15.0,
"Farm Efficiency and Probability", proposals are sought for projects
that address the concerns of family-owned farms with limited financial
resources. Proposals should indicate how target audiences would benefit from the
proposed programs or projects. Proposals ideally will address issues using a
system-wide approach. For instance, a new crop diversification management scheme
should consider potential markets, impact on total farm income and availability
of inputs, and risk management tools for the new production plan. URL:

USDA, CSREES. Amount:
$250,000 Abstract:
The purpose of this program is to support the development of Community Food
Projects with a one-time infusion of federal dollars to make such projects
self-sustaining. Community Food Projects should be designed to: (1) meet the
food needs of low-income people; (2) increase the self-reliance of communities
in providing for their own food needs; and (3) promote comprehensive responses
to local food, farm, and nutrition issues. Community Food Projects are intended
to take a comprehensive approach to developing long-term solutions to an
identified community food need that help to ensure food security in communities
by linking the food production and processing sectors to community development,
economic opportunity, and environmental enhancement.

The FQPA Risk Avoidance and Mitigation for Major Food Crop Systems Program
(RAMP) is a long-term (up to five years) research, education, and extension
competitive grants program to develop reduced risk pest management strategies
for agro-ecosystems or cropping systems. Projects supported by RAMP will have a
food, fiber, or grain production system focus and may include consideration of
food safety, occupational safety, water quality and other environmental
concerns. The RAMP program area will address the major acreage cropping systems
including, but not limited to, corn, soybean, wheat, cotton and rice, as well

Pest Management -- Methyl Bromide Transitions Program (MBT) Sponsor:
USDA, CSREES, Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Deadline:
May 14, 2001. Abstract:
The Methyl Bromide Transitions Program (MBT) supports the discovery and
implementation of practical pest management alternatives for commodities
affected by the phase-out of methyl bromide. Projects supported by MBT will
focus on short-to intermediate-term solutions for all commodities at risk using
presently available or newly developed pest management technologies and
practices. Since alternatives to methyl bromide that have thus far been
developed require different pest management strategies than those used for
methyl bromide alone, projects supported by MBT will emphasize the development
and implementation of integrated management approaches. URL:

Pest Management -- Organic Transition (ORG) Sponsor:
USDA, CSREES, Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Deadline:
May 14, 2001 Abstract:
The purpose of this program is to assist farmers in successfully adopting
organic practices by supporting systems research on organic farming combined
with outreach and education programs to transfer technologies to farmers in the
near term. It is anticipated that the types
of research to be supported will be very applied. Fieldwork for this program
must be done in an organic agro-ecosystem. Applicants are reminded that since
some practices and inputs are unallowable in certified organic production, they
should ensure that their planned work is compatible with organic production. URL:

Grants Sponsor:
Horticultural Research Institute, Inc. Deadline:
May 15, 2001. Abstract:
The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) was established in 1963 as the
research division of the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA). From
the start, HRI sought to add an important new dimension to ANLA's near century
of steadfast commitments to the development of the nursery and landscape
industry. Decades later, HRI remains clear in its purpose:
1. Promote research into the problems and opportunities of the industry,
2. Publish research findings to industry and the general public, 3. Assist its
membership in the practical application of the results of HRI sponsored research
HRI-supported projects focus on a significant problem or opportunity of the
nursery and landscape industry, encourage environmentally responsible management
practices, increase nursery worker's business or financial expertise, or improve
and expand the market for plant material. Specifically, marketing projects open
new markets, improve industry-marketing practices, or introduce new or improved
plant products or packaging. URL:

Water Quality Sponsor: USDA, CSREES,
Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program. Deadline:
May 14, 2001 Abstract:
The Water Quality Program is targeted directly to the identification and
resolution of agriculture-related degradation of water quality. Proposals are
sought that will provide watershed-based information that can be used to: assess
sources of water quality impairment in targeted watersheds; develop and/or
recommend options for continued improvement of water quality in targeted
watersheds; and evaluate the relative costs and benefits associated with clean
up from all responsible sectors (e.g., farming, processing, urban runoff, and
municipal waste treatment). The program will favor proposals that have a clear
problem statement and that are "place-based."
"Place-based" means that the proposers have identified a specific
location where the work is to be conducted so that the results and implications
of the work conducted can be associated with a specific, geo-referenced
location. URL:

Mechanisms of Enhanced Recovery or Destruction in Thermal Remediation Sponsor:
United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Deadline:
April 30, 2001 Abstract:
The Subsurface Protection and Remediation Division (SPRD) of the National
Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) of the Office of Research and
Development (ORD) of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA), Robert
S. Kerr Environmental Research Center, in Ada, Oklahoma, is seeking to award a
cooperative agreement to a nonprofit organization or an interagency agreement
with federal agencies qualified to conduct research in the management,
protection, and remediation of soil, ground water, and aquifer systems. Proposals
are invited to conduct research to advance the scientific understanding of the
effect of heat on the behavior of contaminants in soil and ground water. The
objective of this research project is to study one or more of the mechanisms
that occur when contaminants in the subsurface are heated that aid in the
recovery or destruction of the contaminants. The research should be done in a
manner that will lead to an increased understanding of what these mechanisms are
and under what types of conditions they are important, and when appropriate, how
to control these processes. URL:
