other nonprofit colleges and universities offering a baccalaureate or first
professional degree in at least one discipline or area of the food and
agricultural sciences. The program is designed to strengthen undergraduate
teaching activities in food and fiber, agricultural, renewable natural
resources, forestry, human sciences, veterinary sciences and closely allied
disciplines. URL: http://www.reeusda.gov/serd/hep/hep.htm ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Quality Samples Program (QSP) Sponsor: USDA, Commodity Credit Corporation Deadline: March 12, 2001 Abstract: The Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) announces that
proposals may be submitted for participation in the Quality Samples Program (QSP)
during FY 2001. The QSP is a pilot program designed to encourage the development
and expansion of export markets for U.S. agricultural commodities, under the
authority of the CCC Charter Act, 15 U.S.C. 714c(f). The QSP is designed to
assist U.S. entities in providing commodity samples to potential foreign
importers to promote a better understanding and appreciation for the high
quality of U.S. agricultural commodities. CCC will consider providing funds on a
reimbursement basis to U.S. entities to assist them in providing such samples if
a proposal has been submitted by the interested U.S. entity and accepted by CCC.
QSP participants will be responsible for procuring (or arranging for the
procurement of) commodity samples, exporting the samples, and providing the
technical assistance necessary to facilitate successful use of the samples by
importers. URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=59034 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Programming in Food Systems Sponsor: Kellogg Foundation, W.K., United States Programming
Interests Abstract: To ensure continued food security and access to a
safe and nutritious food supply, the nation's food system must produce food in a
manner that protects the environment and adds economic and social value to rural
and urban communities. Projects funded by the foundation seek to build
partnerships between consumers and producers; to support relevant market and
policy changes; and to link institutions of higher education to communities in
ways that support a viable, healthy, and sustainable food system. Programming in
Food Systems attempts to achieve four key strategies: - Connecting knowledge to
the problems of people; - Promoting sustainable agriculture; - Revitalizing
rural America; - Building economic opportunity in the South URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=3577 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Programming in Rural Development Sponsor: Kellogg Foundation, W.K.; United States Programming
Interests Abstract:
In spite of significant challenges, America's rural communities possess
valuable assets, especially hard-working people who understand and value their
native places. The foundation's rural development programming seeks to help
people capitalize on their strengths and develop new networks among individuals,
communities, and organizations. As
well, Programming in Rural Development attempts to achieve four key strategies:
- Connecting knowledge to the problems of people; - Promoting sustainable
agriculture; - Revitalizing rural America; - Building economic opportunity in
the South URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=28671 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Plant Geneticist/Molecular Biologist - RA-00-019H Sponsor: USDA, ARS, Postdoctoral Research Associate
Positions. Amount: $96,400 Abstract: The
postdoctoral research associate will investigate the molecular genetics of
resistance-gene signaling to Erysiphe graminis in barley. ARS has recently
identified three families of NBS-LRR resistance gene homologues (RGH) associated
with the Mla resistance-gene cluster on chromosome 5 (1H) [Wei et al. 1999.
GENETICS 153:1939-1948]. The
candidate will be responsible for molecular, genetic, and functional
characterization of these RGH sequences and genes that interact with them.
Approaches may include, but are not limited to, isolation of cDNA specific for
candidate alleles, characterization of new Mla-mutant specificities, use of
expressed resistance gene sequences to identify interacting proteins in the
host and/or pathogen in the yeast two-hybrid system, and global
expression analysis via cDNA microarray technology. URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=58834 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Molecular Microbiologist - RA-01-046H Sponsor: USDA, ARS, Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions Amount: $96,400 Abstract: The
postdoctoral research associate will perform transposon mutagenesis in the avian
bacterial pathogen, Mycoplasma gallisepticum to screen for bacterial mutants
with a loss of pathogenicity using established in vitro and in vivo systems. The
goal is to identify and characterize M. gallisepticum genes and gene products
involved in colonization and virulence in order to develop novel methods for
diagnosis and control of avian mycoplasmoses. URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=58922 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Ecologist/Microbiologist/Soil Scientist - RA-00-023H Sponsor: USDA, ARS, Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions Amount: $96,400 Abstract: The postdoctoral research associate will investigate
soil biology/ecology relationships as part of a multi-disciplinary team
developing sustainable cotton cropping systems based on strategies that reduce
nutrient and pesticide inputs and improve soil quality. Research will focus on
complex interactions among environmental conditions, vegetation, soils, and pest
management effects on below
ground ecology. Incumbent
responsibilities include: - evaluate winter cover crop influences on specific
groups of macro- and micro-fauna, fungi, and
bacteria important for reducing nematode damage to reduce insecticide
inputs; - investigate interactions among soil macro- and micro-fauna, and
microbial populations and soil physical, chemical, and biological properties
important for improving soil quality; and - determine positive and negative
effects of soil biota on soil structure, nutrient cycling, and plant health. URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=58837 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Research Engineer
(Civil/Agricultural))/Hydrologist/Computer Modeler (Programmer) RA-00-034H Sponsor: USDA, ARS, Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions Amount: $96,400 Abstract: The postdoctoral research associate will be a member
of a team of scientists studying earth embankment breach resulting from
overtopping during extreme flood events. The incumbent is responsible for
incorporating the results of ongoing research into application software for use
by USDA action agencies and other entities concerned with flooding and public
safety. The effort will require evaluation of action agency application needs,
participation in experimental data analyses, and the integration of new
technology into existing engineering design/analyses procedures. The activity
will take place in Stillwater, Oklahoma. URL: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/getRec?id=58839 ~~~~~~~~~ Title: Hyland R. Abstract: Since 1975, the International Society of Arboriculture Research Trust has awarded small grants to aid, stimulate, and encourage scientific studies of trees. The Hyland R. Johns Grant Program provides funds to qualified researchers for projects of interest and benefit to the arboricultural industry. Research funded by the trust must be in keeping with its mission statement, i.e., focus on the biology, management, and care of trees, and their relation to environmental, social, and economic benefits. CSREES and IFAFS. Deadline: April
23, 2001 Amount: $5,000,000 Abstract: The
purpose of the Initiative for Agriculture and Food Systems (IFAFS) is to support
research, education, and extension grants that address critical emerging U.S.
agricultural issues related to future food production, environmental quality and
