Title: One World: Sustainable Resource Use

Sponsor: Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Inc.

Amount: $25,000

Abstract: The goal of this program is to foster environmental stewardship which is ecologically based, economically sound, culturally appropriate, and sensitive to questions of inter-generational equity. At the global level, the fund seeks to advance international discussions on climate change and biodiversity preservation, and to support and publicize practical, cost-effective models that can contribute to international agreements on these issues. In the area of climate change, the fund focuses on utility-based energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, and green taxes. In the area of biodiversity, the fund focuses on utilizing an ecosystem approach with special emphasis in the terrestrial context on temperate rainforests and in the marine context on fishery and coastal zone management. In the area of related economic concerns, the fund focuses on the impacts of economics, international trade and business, and the role of multilateral financial and grant making institutions, especially as they affect climate and biodiversity. The Fund's three geographic areas of grant activity are the United States, East Central Europe, and East Asia. Within the United States, the fund supports model programs that further its global strategies, and seeks to broaden and deepen the national environmental constituency and reinforce its ability to act effectively. In Central and Eastern Europe, the fund seeks to strengthen indigenous capacity for addressing environmental problems and managing natural resources on a sustainable basis, through education and training, institution-building, policy formulation, and efforts linking government, non-profit sector and business concerns. Special attention is also given to cross-border and regional cooperation and to new funding mechanisms and approaches. In East Asia, the fund seeks to assist communities in their efforts to define and pursue locally appropriate development strategies, with particular attention to sustainable agriculture, coastal management, and integrated watershed planning, and to monitor the social and environmental effects of development programs and fiscal policies resulting from East Asia's integration into the global economy. In all these areas, the fund seeks to integrate activities across geographic areas of the grant making in the United States, East Central Europe, and Asia to promote maximum synergy.

Title: Developing and Improving Institutional Animal Resources - NCRR

Sponsor: Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Research Resources (NCRR).

Deadline: June 01, 2002.

Abstract: The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) encourages the submission of individual animal resource improvement grant applications from biomedical research institutions. The major objective of this program is to upgrade animal facilities to support the conduct of Public Health Service (PHS)-supported biomedical and behavioral research. A related objective is to assist institutions in complying with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Welfare Act and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) policies related to the care and use of laboratory animals. Support is limited to alterations and renovations (A&R) to improve laboratory animal facilities, and the purchase of major equipment items for animal resources, diagnostic laboratories, transgenic animal resources, or similar associated activities. The mechanism available for the support of these improvement projects is the Grant for Repair, Renovation, and Modernization of Existing Research Facilities (G20).

Title: Nutrient Science for Improved Watershed Management Program

Sponsor: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Deadline: November 06, 2001.

Amount: $750,000

Abstract: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Center for Environmental Research (NCER), as part of a joint program, are seeking proposals for research that will provide scientifically defensible methods for the integrated management of nutrients within a watershed. The nutrients of interest for this solicitation are nitrogen and phosphorus. The intent of this solicitation is to develop methods suitable for managing watershed nutrients throughout the United States; however, proposals of more limited scope are anticipated. Such proposals are acceptable if they demonstrate "proof of concept" over large watershed areas and if the study design is able to address nutrient issues in disparate ecological settings. The focus of this research should be on methods to identify and integrate all significant sources and sinks of nutrients within air-sheds and watersheds, across a variety of land cover types and land management activities. Methods are sought that will permit evaluation of linkages among nutrient sources, processes for nutrient removal, and the overall quality of water resources within watersheds. In addition, the research should result in methods for determining how air, water, and land management strategies for managing nutrients complement or negate one another within a specific watershed with respect to meeting water quality objectives. The research must also provide the basis for, and be integrated with, approaches for communicating results to land managers and the public through outreach and extension efforts. The ultimate focus and application of this research is the management of nutrients across a spectrum of spatial (nested watersheds: small to eco-regional) and temporal (daily, seasonal, inter-annual) scales. Consequently, proposals for research that enable estimation and visualization of the spatial and temporal dynamics of alternative nutrient management options are especially desired.
