TITLE: INNOVATIVE FOOD SAFETY PROJECTS;

AVAILABILITY OF GRANTS - DHHS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES Food and Drug Administration Innovative Food Safety Projects

SUMMARY: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), Division of Federal-State Relations (DFSR) is announcing the availability of grant funds for the support of an innovative food safety program. Approximately $250,000 will be available in fiscal year 2000. FDA anticipates making at least five awards, not to exceed $50,000 (direct and indirect costs combined) per award per year. Support of these grants will be for 1 year. The number of grants funded will depend on the quality of the applications received and the availability of Federal funds to support the grant

TITLE: AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY OF THE FUTURE - DOE

PSA#2580 A -- AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY OF THE FUTURE. SOL DE-PS07-00ID13959.

POC, Elaine Richardson, (208) 526-2640. The U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho Operations Office, anticipates issuing a solicitation within the next two weeks seeking applications for innovative cost-shared research, development and demonstration of technologies which will enhance economic competitiveness, reduce energy consumption and reduce environmental impacts in the emerging renewable bioproducts industry. The research must address high priority goals in either the processing or utilization barrier areas identified in the Technology Roadmap for Plant/Crop-Based Renewable Resources 2020. DOE anticipates making approximately 3 to 6 awards with total estimated DOE funding of $400,000 to $750,000 per award a year, each with a duration of three years or less. Multi-partner collaborations including National Laboratories are encouraged. Single organization awards will not be considered. Industrial partners must be included, either as primary applicants or as cost sharing partners. This solicitation will require a fifty per cent (50%) minimum non-federal cost-share.

This year the granting programs have been expanded to include a larger funding vehicle: The Hyland R. Johns Grant Program. SPONSOR: Foundation for Independent Higher Education and AT&T PURPOSE: The Foundation makes awards for projects aimed at sharing intellectual resources, strengthening institutional capacity and preparing students for today’s technology-based workplace, regardless of discipline or industry.

SUMMARY: The Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE) and AT&T invite FIHE-affiliated institutions to apply for AT&T Learning Network Teaching and Technology grants of up to $50,000 to support collaborative projects that use technology to enhance teaching and learning, increase efficiency and lower costs. Projects will be selected on a competitive basis and should be designed to provide students and faculty with the knowledge, skills and experience to effectively use technology in the teaching and learning process. Possible projects might include the development of technology-based coursework, online delivery of coursework, development of faculty expertise in technology-enhanced learning, or collaborations among academic departments and among colleges and institutions with varying degrees of technological resources and expertise.

Replaces: NSF 99-72 DIRECTORATE FOR COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DIRECTORATE FOR ENGINEERING

DEADLINE: June 2, 2000 The Combined Research-Curriculum Development (CRCD) Program, a joint initiative of the Directorate for Engineering (ENG) and the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), supports multidisciplinary projects that integrate new, state-of-the-art research advances in emerging technology areas into upper level undergraduate and introductory graduate engineering and computer and information science curricula. Projects address a need for innovative curricula, courses, textbooks, instructional modules and instructional laboratories by integrating the research and education interests of faculty through involvement in curriculum change. The CRCD program seeks to closely engage faculty researchers, with support of academic administration and industry, in curriculum innovation in the context that education and research are of equal value and complementary parts of an integrative engineering and science education enterprise.

The bedding and container plant industry relies upon the research funded by the Foundation to develop the scientific knowledge needed for the production of flowers, plants, and vegetables, as well as to fund scholarships to attract high caliber people to floriculture research, marketing, retailing, and related fields. The Foundation keeps growers abreast of the latest breaking research and provides a free library of research and other information to help them manage their businesses. The Foundation and PPGA continue to work cooperatively to support the floriculture industry.

TITLE: LINDBERGH PROGRAM GRANTS - CAMF SPONSOR: Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation

PURPOSE: Each year, The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation provides grants of up to $10,580 (a symbolic amount representing the cost of the "Spirit of St. Louis") to men and women whose individual initiative and work in a wide spectrum of disciplines furthers the Lindberghs' vision of a balance between the advance of technology and the preservation of the natural/human environment.

DEADLINE: June 13, 2000

SUMMARY: "The concept of a technology/nature balance, in which Charles and Anne Lindbergh so firmly believed, is now coming to the forefront as the answer to some of our global problems," Clare Hallward, Chairman of the Lindbergh Foundation Grants Selection Committee, has said. "The projects of our grant recipients have, since 1978, made significant contributions to such a balance...and although the grants themselves are somewhat modest in amount, the credibility associated with receiving a Lindbergh Grant has often been the catalyst for researchers to receive additional funding." The value of the Lindbergh Grants program as a provider of seed money and credibility for pilot projects that subsequently receive larger sums from other sources to continue and expand the work has again been confirmed. Seventy-two percent of the Lindbergh Grant recipients responding to a recent survey by the Foundation said they had received additional funding for their research or educational project earlier

TITLE: ENDOCRINE DISRUPTER SCREENING PROGRAM - PSA#2575 B -- ENDOCRINE DISRUPTER SCREENING PROGRAM. SOL PR-HQ-00-10584.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances, Office of Science Coordination and Policy, has a requirement for technical support of its Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program, established to comply with requirements of the Food Quality Protection Act and Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996. The requirement entails comprehensive toxicological and ecotoxicological testing services, including chemical analytical, statistical and quality assurance/quality control support, to assist the Agency in developing, standardizing and validating a suite of in vitro, mammalian and ecotoxicological screens and tests for identifying and characterizing endocrine effects in pesticides, industrial chemicals and environmental contaminants. The effort will include the conduct of laboratory studies and associated analyses to validate the assays proposed for inclusion in EPA's Endocrine Screening Disruptor Program; management, testing and consulting services for use in the development, demonstration, standardization and validation of endocrine disruptor screens and tests; design and performance of toxicity test demonstrations and comparative studies; and development of new guidelines for ecotoxicity and toxicity

SUMMARY: The Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) announces the availability of grant funds and requests proposals for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program--Pest Management for fiscal year (FY) 2000 to support integrated, multifunctional agricultural research, extension, and education activities that address pest management priorities in United States agriculture, particularly those priorities addressing anticipated regulatory losses of key pest management tools resulting from the implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) of 1996. The USDA, ERS is seeking a contractor(s) to support ERS's Food and Assistance Nutrition Research Program (FANRP). FANRP is responsible for conducting studies and evaluations of the Food Stamp, Child Nutritions and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. This will be a multiple award contract. The Government anticipates that up to four (4) contracts may be awarded. This project has been designed to provide ERS with flexible means of collecting and analyzing primary and extant data, both of which ERS needs to inform policy and decision-making processes to effectively conduct studies and evaluations of USDA food and nutrition assistance programs. The project's objective is to evaluate the technical and economic advantages of using precision agriculture in Argentina. Areas of investigation include response to specific local growing conditions, input-output relationships, and characteristics of typical Argentine agricultural producers.
