Title:      Environment Grants

Sponsor:   Philip Morris Companies, Inc.

Deadline:  September 30, 2001

Abstract: The role Philip Morris Companies, Inc. has taken in the area of environmental grant making is underscored by its direct connection to agriculture. All Philip Morris products are agriculturally based, making Philip Morris one of the largest users of agricultural products in the United States. The themes of the Environment program address the manner in which the company utilizes its lands and natural resources and the priority it places on their well being for future generations. The guidelines are focused primarily on two key areas: 1. The restoration, preservation, and conservation of local watersheds and waterways, particularly groundwater, surface water, and drinking water. 2. The preservation of farmlands and agricultural resources and the development of environmentally sound farming practices. A smaller number of grants are made in the areas of municipal solid waste management for such efforts as recycling programs, composting initiatives, and other waste treatment options; and environment and education to develop future environmental leaders. Within these focuses, special attention is given to community programs that demonstrate successful restoration techniques or foster partnerships, educate citizens, and provide sound information on resource management. We look for fresh approaches to existing problems - approaches that may serve as models and contribute to society’s understanding of environmental issues.
